The Wyvern Journal has come out four times a year since 1988. It goes to every member by post, and the full back catalogue is available to members online.
What is in it
- Case studies. Members writing up how they got past a particular problem, with the sources they used and the dead ends they went down first.
- Transcription news. What has been added since the last issue, and what the volunteers are working on next.
- Members’ appeals. Brick walls put out to the membership. These get answered more often than you would expect.
- Record notes. Short pieces on a particular register, its quirks and its gaps.
- Society business. Committee notices, AGM papers and the accounts.
The autumn issue
Out now and on its way to members. This one leads on the Marlcombe baptism transcriptions completed over the summer, with a piece on what the 1813 change to the register format actually meant for the information recorded.
Back issues
Every issue from 1988 onwards has been scanned and is searchable in the members’ area. The early ones are typed and photocopied rather than typeset, which is part of their charm, and they record a good deal of local detail that never made it anywhere else.
Write for us
We would far rather print a member’s piece than fill pages ourselves. If you have untangled something, or found a record set other people should know about, the editor would like to hear from you. A thousand words is plenty and you do not need to be a writer.
