Parish coverage

84 parishes at the last count, concentrated around Marlcombe and the Ashen Hills and extending into east Devon. Coverage is uneven, because it depends entirely on what survives and who has had time to transcribe it.

How to read this

A parish listed as complete means every surviving register for that period has been transcribed and checked by a second reader. In progress means work has started. Registers survive means we know the material exists but nobody has begun.

Gaps are not always gaps

A missing period usually means the register was lost, damaged or never deposited, rather than that nothing happened. The Commonwealth years, roughly 1642 to 1660, are patchy almost everywhere. If a family vanishes from one parish, check whether a neighbouring chapelry was carved out of it around the same date.

East Devon

Our Devon coverage is thinner and mostly post 1813. The full list of 84 parishes, with exact date ranges and what has been checked, is in the members’ area and printed in the spring journal each year.
